Teaching my international students about the value of creativity gives me the perfect excuse to work on my own - and pushes me to practice what I preach.

After months of evaluating others' creativity as a writing teacher, it's time to spend a month relaxing into some creativity of my own.

Signed up next month for a two-weekend class, "Drawing for People Who Think They Can't Draw." One of my influential quilt instructors once told me (5 years ago?) that I might benefit from taking a drawing class. I had been complaining about how hard it is for me to get the perspective right when I do pictorial quilts. Hoping that class helps me have a better understanding of how to work with line and perspective. If I manage to come up with anything good, I'll post a few pics.

No problem. I love your colors, and your owls are cool too. They have a special meaning for me these last few years.
Aww, thank you very much!
May I ask why they are special to you? If it's too personal, it's okay!
Well, it may sound bizarre, but a few years ago a friend of mine was always talking about the "feminine aspects of God" and I was really puzzling over what she meant. We were studying the Bible together and one night read a section that talked about Wisdom, using the pronoun she. It talked about Wisdom having been present at creation, and the creation story at the beginning of the Bible talks about the Spirit of God moving over the water. Somehow the story clicked and I thought perhaps that "She" (wisdom) was God's Spirit - that the Wise Spirit is God's way of mothering us. That evening as I was walking my dog, we heard and saw a horned owl, and of course many people associate owls with wisdom. Somehow the owl has become a reminder of how God's Spirit mothers me - having had a tough relationship with my mom growing up. Long story, but that's why owls are special to me. Thanks for asking.
