First Class Man (A Newspaper Poem)
First-class people
Reach the milestone, fair or not.
He can do everything -
Doesn’t break as much
He gets it - phenomenal
He has that magic,
A pride thing.
Sofa covered with guns
Adds another dimension -
A tough road taken lightly,
A great energy.
Cinderella story -
Had the dream, pushed hard
Crumbled.
Speaks out -
Vulgar comments, out of a shotgun
Jangled nerves.
Thousands squawking, laughing
I thought he was ready,
Great passion for the game -
I just need to hear some island music.

Hope for the Northern Hemisphere
Why
Do we always
Look to the sky
When faced with hurt
Here on the earth?
Is it only that stars are there for signs
As Genesis said,
And we long for signs?
Or perhaps when we look
To left or right,
The pain's too near,
The hope too slight,
And so our hearts defy gravity
And gaze up into blackest night
Where we find warriors
Defend our cause
At the foot of the throne
Where God must sit.
There horses fly
With graceful pause
Beside white swans,
And ladles tip
To drop cool water on our tongues
That long for springs
Of more to come.
We find great solace in the sky.
We find the place where spirits go.
We find our tears light up the night
With messages sent years ago.

Literature
Moon and Tide
She looks with deep-set laughing eyes
And spreads her loving arms out wide
To call and hug the evening tide
As it comes running to its place,
Its home within her cool embrace.
But as the hours pass away
He pulls back from her arms again
And runs back to his other space.
She lets him go, and smiles still
Because she knows he needs that place.
He loves it too half of the day,
But she knows he will still come back
When morning wends its rising track
And trades her cool for warmer place.
She knows he cannot stay away.
He loves the brightness of her face.

Literature
Mothering
My hearts screams
"NOooooo!"
But I have to say yes
With a smile
And be convincing.
Some girls are moms
At this age
And at twenty-six
Twice as old
They are in my shoes
Without my life
To help them
Make decisions
Does it help?
Experience?
I don't know
Perhaps
It just makes
Me forget
And feel far
The things I thought
I'd never lose
Are gone
And I am here
Screaming no
In my heart
While my lips
Smile yes
And are convincing.

Confetti
When all my heart's
Been torn
Into tiny little pieces
Like so much
Swirling confetti
Blowing in the wind,
I have to believe
That all the world
Is just
A snow-globe.
Otherwise I cannot
Dream of ever
Getting it
All back again.

Teaching my international students about the value of creativity gives me the perfect excuse to work on my own - and pushes me to practice what I preach.

No problem. I love your colors, and your owls are cool too. They have a special meaning for me these last few years.

Aww, thank you very much!
May I ask why they are special to you? If it's too personal, it's okay!

Well, it may sound bizarre, but a few years ago a friend of mine was always talking about the "feminine aspects of God" and I was really puzzling over what she meant. We were studying the Bible together and one night read a section that talked about Wisdom, using the pronoun she. It talked about Wisdom having been present at creation, and the creation story at the beginning of the Bible talks about the Spirit of God moving over the water. Somehow the story clicked and I thought perhaps that "She" (wisdom) was God's Spirit - that the Wise Spirit is God's way of mothering us. That evening as I was walking my dog, we heard and saw a horned owl, and of course many people associate owls with wisdom. Somehow the owl has become a reminder of how God's Spirit mothers me - having had a tough relationship with my mom growing up. Long story, but that's why owls are special to me. Thanks for asking.
